Md. Officers Learning To Combat Animal Cruelty, Fighting

HAGERTOWN, Md. (AP) -- About two dozen law enforcement officers and veterinarians are gathering in Hagerstown to learn how to combat animal cruelty and animal fighting.

The Humane Society of the United States says the seminar Friday at Hagerstown Community College is led by Sgt. Michael Gabrielson of the Kettering, Ohio, Police Department.

He worked undercover in a multistate investigation of dogfighting that led to dozens of arrests and convictions in 2007.

The Humane Society says the seminar participants are from 13 different agencies in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The group says the training isn't required in Maryland but it counts toward the officers' continuing education credits.
