Fire Department Reports Smoke In Bethesda Metro Tunnel

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- Fire officials are reporting smoke in a subway tunnel in Bethesda.

A Montgomery County fire department spokesman tweeted Tuesday morning that there was smoke in a tunnel between

Metro's Bethesda and Medical Center stations and firefighters were on the scene.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says the transit agency is investigating reports of a malfunctioning electrical insulator. Stessel says he's not aware of "active smoke at this time."

In January, one woman died and dozens of people were sickened by smoke after a train became stranded in a smoky tunnel in downtown Washington. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the electrical malfunction that led to the smoke.
