Police Officer Found Guilty Of Assaulting Student In Md.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A Prince George's County police officer has been found guilty of assaulting a student.

Authorities announced Monday that Police Officer First Class Charles Pickard was found guilty of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and malfeasance.

Police said Pickard was working as a school resource officer at Suitland High School in November 2013 when he struck a student and then placed the student under arrest. The incident was caught on video. Pickard, who has been with the department for six years, had been suspended without pay.

Pickard's attorney, Shaun F. Owens, did not immediately return a telephone message left Monday at his office requesting comment.

County Police Chief Mark Magaw said in a statement that he would not tolerate any officer abuses of authority.
