Pop Icon Prince Announces Surprise Concert Sunday

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A pop icon is set to perform in Charm City. Prince has announced a special Baltimore concert this Sunday.

Amy Yensi reports excitement is growing.

There are still plenty of tickets left. The legendary singer is expected to perform his new song called "Baltimore." It's a tribute to our city and to Freddie Gray.

The fancy footwork and celebrated voice is set to wow Baltimore fans in a matter of days.

Prince announces his special "Rally 4 Peace" concert at the Royal Farms Arena.

"Prince, he has a flamboyant type of style," one fan said.

The Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10 show has fans excited to hear their all-time favorites--like "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry."

The surprise performance is meant to promote an end to violence that has gripped the city in recent days.

The message of healing is also the theme of the singer's new tribute song called "Baltimore." Though yet to be released, the lyrics call for peace, reading in part:

"Does anybody hear us pray/For Michael Brown or Freddie Gray/Peace is more than an absence of war/We're tired of crying and people dying/Let's take all the guns away."

Concertgoers are asked to wear something gray in honor of Freddie Gray. Though not required, the dress code also shows solidarity with victims of violence.

"You need something positive to bring the people's minds back," one fan said.

The Grammy and Oscar-winning performer will be joined by his funk-rock group 3RDEYEGIRL. Part of the proceeds will go to Baltimore-based youth charities.

Other stars are expected to be at the concert and join Prince in the performance of the "Baltimore" song.

You can only buy tickets online, they're not available at the box office. There is a two ticket limit.
