Kathleen Kennedy Townsend Endorses Van Hollen For Senate

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) -- Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is endorsing Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen for Senate.

Townsend, a Democrat, is announcing the endorsement Monday afternoon at the Leisure World retirement community in Silver Spring.

Townsend is a former lieutenant governor of Maryland. She had been considering running for the Senate seat that is opening because Sen. Barbara Mikulski isn't seeking re-election in 2016.

Townsend cited Van Hollen's plan to change the tax code to reward retirement savings as one of the reasons why she is endorsing him. She also noted his work to strengthen Social Security and protect Medicare.

Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards also is running for the Democratic nomination for Senate.
