Married Couple Found Murdered In Rockville Home

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- Plenty of unanswered questions in Rockville. A married couple is found murdered just hours after they were out with a group of friends.

Rick Ritter has the latest on the investigation.

It was a very active crime scene Monday. Police are investigating both deaths as homicides, while the killer or killers are still on the loose.

Detectives on scene and a warm, loving couple dead. A Rockville neighborhood is now the center of a Mother's Day slaying.

"Just one of those things where you just can't believe it and then it snaps back and you remember," said Abbe Gross, friend of victims.

That has many searching desperately for answers.

Saturday around midnight, neighbors say 65-year-old Richard Vilardo and his wife, 67-year-old Julianne, returned home after a night out with friends across the street. But just hours later--a bizarre discovery.

The couple's daughter came to check on her parents after they never showed up for a Mother's Day event. When she arrived at their home, she found both dead--still in their pajamas.

Police say Richard was found dead in their backyard; his wife inside the home--both with trauma to their upper bodies.

Investigators believe entry was made into the home through a window, but glass was never broken.

"Scares me. In their pajamas? This poor couple," said Gross.

Gross often played tennis with Julianne, saying her heart is crushed.

"Like fruit of the Earth kind of woman. Happy. Enjoyed life. Mellow. Appreciated everything she had," she said.

Neighbors are on edge. Some now losing sleep knowing something like this could happen in their community.

"I don't know who's responsible for all of this," said one neighbor. "I hope certainly they find somebody, whoever did this."

Police aren't naming any suspects, but neighbors say they are investigating a group of tree trimmers who were at the house over the weekend.

The medical examiner has ruled both deaths homicide, saying the two were killed with sharp force injuries.
