Police: Man Shot By Md. Deputies Rammed 2 Vehicles
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man after he rammed two deputies' vehicles, authorities said Monday.
The man, identified as Lionel Young, 34, was a suspect in a domestic dispute involving a knife, police said. Investigators recovered two knives from the scene after Young was fatally shot Sunday night, police said.
Sheriff's deputies spotted Young in a truck Sunday night after responding to a 911 call in Landover about a domestic dispute, authorities said. The deputies tried to pull him over but he sped away, police said. The deputies pursued him and, according to police, he rammed two vehicles in a parking lot near a school. Two deputies opened fire and fatally shot Young.
Young's mother, Brenda Young, declined to comment when reached by telephone Monday afternoon.
County police and the sheriff's policy compliance division are investigating the shooting.
Neither deputy was injured, said Sharon Taylor, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. The deputies have been with the department for five and six years, respectively, and are on routine administrative leave.
Young had a criminal record including arrests for armed robbery, assault, use of a handgun during a felony, theft and escape from custody, according to online court records.
It was the second fatal shooting involving a deputy in seven months. In October, Deputy Kendal Wade shot and killed 38-year-old Michael Ricardo Minor while responding to a domestic violence call in Suitland. A grand jury declined to indict Wade, according to The Washington Post. Minor's family filed a $10 million wrongful death suit against the county last month in federal court.
