2 Raccoons Test Positive For Rabies; Person & Cow Bitten

OAKLAND, Md. (AP) -- The Garrett County Health Department has announced two raccoons, one that bit a cow and one that bit a person, have both tested positive for rabies.

The Cumberland Times-News reports a raccoon chased and then bit a person in the Accident area before being shot. The individual bitten began post-exposure rabies treatment immediately.

The other rabid raccoon, which bit a cow in the Finzel area, was shot by the property owner. The cow was euthanized and buried. The Maryland Department of Agriculture is following up with the farmer.

The county's Environmental Health Services says there was no other human or animal exposure in either case.

Both raccoons were sent to the Maryland Department of Mental Health and Hygiene Rabies Laboratory in Baltimore.
