Fire Forces Md. Family To Throw 2 Children From Window

DEALE, Md. (AP) -- A family that awoke to find flames and smoke alarms blaring escaped a fire in their home by throwing two young children from a second-floor window.

Anne Arundel County fire officials tell WTOP Radio the family of nine was alerted to the fire early Sunday morning. Officials say two children, ages 2 and 3, were thrown out of the window to family members below.

Authorities say a 58-year-old grandmother was also trapped on the second floor. She was forced to jump and sustained serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Firefighters say the home was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. It took about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Five adults and four children have been displaced.
