2 Bikes Worth $10K Stolen From Hampden Shop

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The cycling community in Baltimore is on the lookout for a rare and expensive bike stolen from a Hampden bike shop.

As Mike Schuh reports, it's believed the thieves don't even know what they have.

It's only five years old, but the 20-20 Bike Shop is known worldwide and is a Hampden fixture.

"Well, as far as we can tell, it was about 1:30 in the morning," said co-owner Johnny May.

That's when May says the front door was bashed in. There's still glass outside and the door is covered in plywood. Right inside the door was May's custom race bike. He put it there to pick up for a race on Sunday.

"New, it was probably $3,500," he said.

But that wasn't the worst of it.

"This one, the red one. It's pretty rare. Not a lot of them in the country. That's because it's a hybrid, has a battery pack. It's no longer a struggle to go up a hill," he said.

Cool, new things are pricey. The bike that was stolen cost $5,900.

"The one bike was an electric assist, so great for commuters," May said. "People that want to ride to work and don't want to sweat to death or work too hard. So yeah, that bike was worth around $6,000."

But here's the rub: the thieves didn't get the special charger to charge the battery.

"But they may not know what they have or how to turn it on or use it," May said.

Through social media, word is out in the biking community. So if you see the most expensive bike you'll probably never own, please call police.

Surveillance camera footage from nearby businesses is being collected. The bike shop is now looking into installing its own system.
