6 Officers Indicted In Freddie Gray's Death

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — New charges against the six officers accused in Freddie Gray's death. The case sparked protests, riots and destructive looting in Baltimore.

Rick Ritter with details of the indictment.

City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby says based on new evidence that's not being released, some charges have been revised--but the ones with the most prison time still stand.

It's been more than a month since the tragic death of Freddie Gray. Now the officers linked to his high-profile arrest are indicted by a grand jury.

"These past two weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to a grand jury that just today returned indictments for all six officers," said Mosby.

Evidence City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby says was strong enough to alter charges.

"As if often the case, during an ongoing investigation, charges can and should be re-advised based upon the evidence," said Mosby.

The grand jury added charges of reckless endangerment for all six officers, while one count of assault and charges of false imprisonment are removed for three.

Major charges--like second-degree "depraved heart" murder for Officer Caesar Goodson, Jr.—still stand.

Gray was arrested back on April 12, but suffered a severe spinal injury while in police custody and later died.

His death sparked riots throughout city streets, forcing the mayor to implement a curfew and the governor to call in the National Guard.

Attorneys for the six officers indicted have called for Mosby to be taken off the case, saying she has conflicts of interest—something that Mosby has denied.

Baltimore City FOP released a statement, saying:

"All citizens are innocent until proven guilty, including these six officers. Baltimore City FOP Lodge #3 is asking for the community's support for the thousands of men and women of the Baltimore Police Department who protect and serve our neighborhoods every day. Together, we can move our city forward."
