High School Senior Honored For 13 Years Of Perfect Attendance

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)--Thirteen years, more than 2,500 consecutive days of never missing a day in school. It seems impossible, but not for one student in Baltimore County.

Ron Matz has more on a young woman whose remarkable achievement is the talk of the town.

Madison Mitzel remembers how it started. From kindergarten through Warren Elementary, she never missed a day.

"It was the 5th grade when I realized that I had perfect attendance because I won an award and it counted the days of school and it was 1,081 days which was crazy," said Madison Mitzel, Dulaney High graduating senior.

At the time 1,081 consecutive days--the streak continued at Cockeysville Middle.

Madison says, "I actually love learning, I think that school is fun."

She kept her perfect attendance record at Dulaney High School where she's a graduating senior.

"I normally don't get sick. I'm a very active person, I try to eat as healthy as I can so I was rarely ever sick at school," Mitzel said.

Madison says she even waited in the nurse's office for an hour before her mom came so it would be counted as a full day.

Madison will be honored at awards night at Dulaney High for achieving what seemed impossible--13 years of perfect school attendance.

And don't worry…it's not going to stop here for Madison.

"I'm going to Purdue University in Indiana and will probably maintain my perfect attendance, at least I hope. After that I want to be a buyer in fashion," she said.

Madison is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to study Retail Management this fall.

Madison is the daughter of Kathy Mitzel, WJZ Director of Human Resources.
