15,000 Gallons Of Raw Sewage Spill Near Western Md. Lake

OAKLAND, Md. (AP) -- Garrett County officials estimate that 15,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled from a broken pipe near Deep Creek Lake on Memorial Day weekend.

The county's public works agency said Tuesday the spill was stopped by midnight Saturday night, about five hours after it was reported near the McComas Beach area about seven miles north of Oakland.

The agency says the sewage spilled from a lakeside address along Lake Forest Drive into an adjacent stream and along the roadway.

Officials say they cleaned the area along the road and treated it with hydrated lime. They also notified neighbors and posted warning signs at nearby properties and docks along the shoreline.

Officials say signs will remain in place until sampling indicates the water is safe.
