Bloodshed Continues; Baltimore Reaches Another Deadly Milestone

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Another violent weekend in the city, with several people shot and one person killed. The violence pushes Baltimore past a grim milestone as we enter the summer.

Amy Yensi with details.

The homicide count --rising -- making May the deadliest month in over 40 years.

Shootings and the crime scenes that follow – becoming all too common in the streets of Baltimore City.

"It has gotten to that point. You're just like, 'Oh. Someone else is shot. People get shot every day,'" said Jeremiah Soko.

The latest – a double shooting on the 1900 block of N. Collington Avenue that left one person dead.

It's the 43rd homicide this month, making May the city's third deadliest month in 45 years.

"Regardless if it was 43 or 1, it's still something that we shouldn't recognize," said one man.

Our media partner, The Baltimore Sun, reports May was tied at the number three spot with August of 1990 with 42 homicides. This – after two men were fatally shot in the head on Belair Road early Sunday morning.

By the afternoon, a record set four decades ago – shattered.

"There are a small number of individuals that define the perception of this city, a small number of individuals with no code of ethics, who are killing babies and killing women," said Baltimore City State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby.

"We have lives that are at stake," said Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts.

"At a time where the cries for justice are ringing loud – not just in Baltimore, but all over the country – we know that without the community, there can be no justice," the mayor said.

A call for the police and community to join forces and turn the rising tide of violence that's sweeping the city.

With the month ending Sunday night, many hope this troubling trend ends with it.

August of 1972 and December of 1971 are the top two deadliest months for Baltimore City, with 45 and 44 homicides, respectively.
