Man Shot By Md. Officer Faces Theft, Gun Charges

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A man who was shot by police outside a shopping center in Upper Marlboro has been charged with theft and handgun offenses.

Prince George's County police say they believe 44-year-old Clyde Peterson and another man drove a stolen car to the shopping center on Monday morning with plans to rob a bank. Both Peterson and the other man were shot by the officer. Police say charges are pending against the other man, who remains hospitalized.

The officer was identified Tuesday as Officer First Class David Gross.

Police say Gross spotted the stolen car on Monday morning and approached it. Although the investigation is ongoing, police believe Gross saw one or both of the men brandishing weapons before opening fire. Police say two guns were recovered from the car.
