2nd Man Shot By Md. Officer Faces Theft, Gun Charges

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A second man who was shot by police outside a shopping center in Upper Marlboro has been charged with theft and handgun offenses.

Prince George's County police announced Thursday that 42-year-old Derrick Simmons of Upper Marlboro has been charged with felony theft and handgun-related charges.

Police say they believe Simmons and 44-year-old Clyde Peterson drove a stolen car to the shopping center on Monday morning with plans to rob a bank. The investigation is ongoing, but police believe Officer First Class David Gross saw one or both men brandishing weapons before opening fire. Police say two guns were recovered from the car.
