Officials: Dog Jumping On Stove Causes Upper Marlboro Fire
PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY, Md. (WJZ)—A pet dog jumping on the front of a stove causes a large fire in Upper Marlboro on Sunday.
It happened just after 12:00 p.m. in the 9800 block of Healy Court.
Authorities say 41 firefighters arrived on the scene to see fire through the roof.
No human occupants were injured in the blaze, however one of the family's dogs died in the fire. A second dog was also rescued suffering from burns.
According to fire officials, the homeowners reported that their pet dogs occasionally jump on the front of the stove to search for food scraps. During this incident, authorities say one of the animals accidentally turned on one of the stove burners while pizza boxes were located on the stove top.
A firefighter was hospitalized due to dehydration, officials said. He has since been released.
The fire caused approximately $100,000 in damage.
Fire crews also battled a second blaze Sunday afternoon in the 6300 block of Gwinnett Lane. No one was injured in the fire.
