Training Camp Preview With Tony Lombardi

Training Camp for the Baltimore Ravens begins on Thursday July 22nd with the rookies and quarterbacks reporting to the Under Armor Performance Center. Tony Lombardi from the Russell Street Report joined the Scott Garceau Show, with Terry Ford filling in with Jeremy, to take a look at how the Ravens are shaping up heading into training camp. One of the first thing Scott noted was how the Ravens have been out of the news cycle this year. Tony compared it to the team heading into training camp last year. "It's been a quiet offseason and that's good news too because we had a lot to talk about and none of it was good at this time of the year."

A lot of position battles shake themselves out early in training camp, Terry asked Tony what battles fans should look for this year. "Most of the ones I think are going to be tightly contested are on offense. The first one is between Maxx Williams and Crockett Gilmore. Crockett Gilmore is showing uop really well in these OTA's, he really looks like he's running with a lot more confidence. Sometimes when you run with more confidence it's because you kow where you're supposed to be on a play and you're not thinking about things and therefore it gives the perception the guys gotten faster but it's just that he knows his assignment better and therefore he can execute it without thinking and he can just let his athleticism take over... A lot of people not just in Baltimore but around the league, most people think Maxx Williams is going to be that guy because he was projected to be a first round guy  and he fell to the Ravens in the second round. I think he's going to have an uphill battle against Crockett Gilmore so that's going to be a really hotly contested battle."

The Ravens have been mentioned on the rumor mill to be interested in veteran Wide Receiver Reggie Wayne. Tony dives in to whether Baltimore could sign the 36 year old Wide Out. "I've asked Ravens people in the past about veterans like this when they become available on the market. They always go back to this and say 'If those guys still have something left in the tank don't you think their old team would still want them?' The Colts went out and replaced him with other receivers. Andre Johnson is on board there and I think they drafted a guy to so they replaced himn with other receivers... I just think that those guys, I guess it's easy to fall in love with the players they used to be but they're not those players anymore and there is a reason their old teams don't want them anymore."
