Triple Crown Winner Takes Haskell Invitational

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- American Pharoah wins again, this time in New Jersey. The horse made history in Baltimore, winning the Preakness and going on to win Belmont for the Triple Crown---this as Maryland racing continues to grow with several thoroughbreds who could win big in the next few years.

Jessica Kartalija has more.

"Absolutely historical. It's a once in a lifetime feat and it just feels great to be here," said Renee Davis.

Thousands gather with hopes to see history made once again in American Pharoah's first race since winning the Triple Crown in June.

He didn't disappoint in his first race after victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

"We have a few racehorses here," said Horacio de Paz, the farm trainer at Sagamore Farm in Baltimore County. "We are still trying to improve our caliber or horses to be able to compete at the top. We are around the corner of being able to be on the national stage."

With big goals for Maryland racing, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank bought Sagamore Farm in 2007.

"[The future of Maryland's horse racing] is bright---very bright---and people just need to believe that," Plank said.

American Pharoah is the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years. The goal is to have one from Sagamore.

"We are going to be improving our stock and hopefully have a Triple Crown-caliber horse," de Paz said. "It's really fun."

Following the Haskell, American Pharoah's immediate plans are still up in the air but the goal is to race in the prestigious Breeders Cup in Lexington at the end of October.
