School Begins For Some Children In 4 Md. Counties

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Summer came to an end Monday for students all across Maryland as they headed back to school.

Rick Ritter had a look at the first day for students and teachers.

It's the unofficial end to summer and 8:00 a.m. came early for a lot of parents and kids. Teachers did everything they could to make sure things ran smoothly---knowing you only get one shot at the first day back.

It's more than just a new school year in Owings Mills.

"Every single year has more and more excitement," said Baltimore County Superintendent Dallas Dance.

For Lyons Mils Elementary, it's their first day---ever.

"It's kind of hard," said one student.

The $25 million school welcomed in roughly 600 students---a new chapter for Baltimore County.

"We're adding 700 seats right here with this," Dance said.

In Glen Burnie, it's a cluster of feet in the halls at 7:45 a.m. Principal Kristy Snyder greeted more than 400 kids at Glendale Elementary.

"I'm so excited," she told students. "Maybe even more excited than you."

For many parents, it was tough to say goodbye.

"I miss them," said one.

Teachers and students didn't miss a beat.

Now one day down---and only nine months to go.

"You cannot have a second first day or restart the first day. Teachers and students are in the classroom now establishing routines, setting those high expectations and, most importantly, establishing those teacher-student relationships," Snyder said.

Anne Arundel County is one county considering pushing start times back next school year---meaning, come next August, kids could start later.

Both Howard and Frederick counties started Monday, as well. Baltimore City starts school next week.
