New Group Makes Getting In Shape Cheaper, If Not Easier

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Surveys show that, by this time of year, 75% will have broken a New Year's resolution to get in better shape.

While there are many reasons and excuses, Mike Schuh reports money shouldn't be one of them.

What Sydney Van Horn and two friends started has grown into this: the Baltimore tribe of the November Project.

A few Novembers ago, it was started in Boston. It began with free morning workouts but it grew. Now it's in 21 cities---and there's no end in sight.

There's 5:30 running and then yoga. There's also a 6:30 run and then exercises.

"Let's get people awake. Let's get people active and meeting each other real early in the morning and it brings people close together," said Nick Rod.

"It means come take part in making your city a playground and putting community back into fitness, to take your headphones out and put community back in," said Van Horn.

Each city has a tag. Baltimore's, of course, is a crab. Travel to another November Project city? Fetch another tag. Van Horn has them all.

"You're not supposed to do things by yourself. You're supposed to be in community and to do life together and this is exactly what this does," said Van Horn.

Unrelenting positivity but with big expectations.

"You have basically committed to the entire group, the entire tribe, that you're coming," said Eric Schulman. "And if you don't go, you hear it from them. So it's all about accountability for me."

So if that's what you need, get up and get in on this community, seeking improvement---one picture at a time.

That group meets at 6:30 a.m. every Wednesday at Rash Field and every Friday at Patterson Park. There is no cost.
