Mandel Lies In Repose At Maryland State House

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- A final tribute for a former Maryland governor whose life was long and eventful.

Alex DeMetrick reports Marvin Mandel returned to the State House in Annapolis, where he knew accomplishment and controversy.

Governor Larry Hogan provided every state honor Maryland could bestow on former Governor Marvin Mandel as his casket was brought to lie in repose in the hall of the State House.

Governor from 1969 to 1975, Mandel was praised for modernizing state government.

"He made Maryland a better place and we will all be forever grateful for that," Hogan said.

But there was also controversy: Mandel's conviction and prison time for fraud, which was later overturned by the Supreme Court.

"And long after everyone forgets the controversies, we're going to continue to have a better state government because Marvin Mandel was Speaker of the House and Governor," said former Governor Parris Glendening.

"He was an excellent legislator, became a very good governor, was a good man," said former Governor Harry Hughes.

"He did not see party at all. He saw people and he saw the state of Maryland. He was going to do what he thought best for our state," said former Governor Robert Ehrlich.

The family and friends who knew Mandel best also attended to reflect and remember a life that spanned 95 years.

"It's tough," said stepson Paul Dorsey. "It's a little overwhelming but he was a wonderful man and he did everything he could for the state."

"I'm so very pleased he's getting full honors, recognition and all the flurries and the dignitaries and the respect in his funeral," said friend Bruce Bereano.

Marvin Mandel's funeral will be held Thursday at Sol Levinson and Brothers Funeral Home in Baltimore County. The 11 a.m. service is open to the public.
