Study: Maryland Ranks High In Solar Power Programs

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- When it comes to solar power, Maryland is doing better than most states cashing in on the sun.

Alex DeMetrick reports we're even beating the Sunshine State.

Whether the sun is shining on a single solar panel or a large solar array, a study compiled by Environment Maryland of 30 states finds:

"Maryland ranks 12th in terms of solar power capacity per person ahead of much sunnier states, even like Florida and Texas," said David Beavers, Environment Maryland.

Western states generate the most, but have more people to power. Maryland's connection rate is better than most in the survey because of incentives.

"It's really thanks to smart solar policies on the books here in Maryland that are encouraging folks to go solar. That's what's made the difference here," said Beavers. "The state has shown a really strong effort in promoting residential, in particular."

Residential solar programs are already paying off for some in Maryland.

"Today, we're announcing more than 260 solar energy projects that will be created to help low and moderate income communities save money on their energy bills," said Brian Deese, presidential advisor.

In July, the Obama Administration made Baltimore a priority in bringing solar to those who can at least afford it, generating immediate interest.

"With that extra money that I'll be saving, it'll be beneficial," said Faye Taylor. "I can buy food, gas, things of that nature."

It might even boost Maryland's ranking next year. According to the study, solar use here grew by fifty percent last year.

The study also tracked jobs created by Solar Power Installations in Maryland. Solar employs 3,000 workers.
