7-Year-Old Girl Dies After Apparent Drowning In Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. (WJZ) — A holiday weekend tragedy in Ocean City. Police are investigating the apparent drowning of a seven-year-old girl.

Pat Warren reports police say there were no lifeguards on duty when the girl went under.

The little girl's death is still under investigation, but it appears she was knocked down by a wave and disappeared under the surf in rough waters.

A deadly weekend at the beach. A seven-year-old girl swimming with friends drowns.

Police say it happened after 5:30 p.m. Saturday after lifeguards had gone off duty.

The girl was reportedly swimming with friends when a wave hit her and pulled her out into deeper water.

Minutes later, she was found about a quarter mile from shore.

Emergency crews rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

All along the shore, swimmers are being warned about rough waters.

"It was extremely rough and dangerous yesterday. It was not a place for anybody to be out on the beach. With kids out there, it's even more dangerous," said Captain Kent Buckson, Rehobeth Beach Patrol.

A 35-year-old man also went missing while swimming at Ocean City around 1 a.m. Sunday. He has not been found.

Ocean City police report more than a dozen riptide rescued Sunday.

The investigation of the girl's drowning continues. Her name has not been released.
