Pocomoke City Officials Introduce New Police Chief

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. (AP) -- Officials in Pocomoke City have named a new police chief, months after the high-profile firing of the previous chief.

The Daily Times reports that City Manager Ernie Crofoot introduced William Harden Sr. at Tuesday night's meeting. Harden must complete the rest of the employment process before the selection becomes official.

Crofoot says Harden, a Delmar resident who retired after 25 years with the Maryland State Police, was chosen from eight candidates.

Former Chief Kelvin Sewell, the town's first black police chief, was fired in June. Sewell has claimed that he was fired for refusing to terminate two other black officers who, like Sewell, have filed job discrimination complaints.

City officials have denied that claim, but say privacy rules surrounding personnel issues bar them from disclosing details.
