Baltimore Mayor Thanks Supporters; Plans To Heal A Struggling City

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--One day after announcing she won't be seeking re-election, Baltimore's mayor steps out thanking everyone for their support and says she's looking forward to concentrating on healing the city.

WJZ's Tracey Leong has more.

It was an overwhelming amount of support for Baltimore's 49th mayor as she thanked the community at what would have been her campaign headquarters in Remington.

"If this is the decision that she feels is best for the city, then we respect it and stand behind her 100 percent," said business owner Mimmo Cricchio.

Dana Moore, who lives in Baltimore says, "I support Stephanie, it's a hard decision that she has made."

Since April's unrest and a spike in city violence, the mayor has been under fire. She says her decision will allow her to concentrate on healing Baltimore, which has always been her priority.

"I know change is sometimes difficult, but I am very very excited about these next 15 months, and what this next chapter is going to be for me," said Rawlings-Blake.

Baltimoreans are looking forward to what she'll accomplish.

"I definitely think it gives her more time focusing on helping Baltimore recover," said Cricchio.

Congressman Elijiah Cummings applauding this move and says this can only make her more effective during her remaining time in office.

"She doesn't have to bite her tongue about what she feels, cause she doesn't have to worry about political repercussion, and she can get things done and probably call out folks who are blocking her from achieving her agenda," said Congressman Elijah Cummings.

The mayor has not announced if she will be endorsing any of the candidates running for her position.
