Mayor Rawlings-Blake Speaks To Mothers Of Murdered Children

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake met with the Mothers of Murdered Sons at Alpha Omega Church Sunday afternoon.

Marcus Washington reports for WJZ.

The mayor met with organization  to talk through the pain while looking for solutions.

Police investigations are becoming a too often occurrence in Baltimore City.

It has been a year plagued with record monthly homicides, reaching more than 230 for the year in September.

"When you have an excessive amount of violence and you have individuals who don't have any concern for their lives or the lives of their community with unvetted access to guns, everyone is a victim," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Each mother shares her story of how her child was murdered in Baltimore, showing that the mothers are not alone in the pain they're feeling.

"Two cousins murdered, my brother was stabbed in a car jacking; talking to these mothers is like talking to members of my family," Rawlings-Blake said.

The purpose of Sunday's event is to talk to those personally affected and see what changes they want to see to better protect the city and the people who live here.

"Unfortunately in Baltimore, too many of our young people have been caught in the crossfire," said  the mayor. "But again, it's going to take more than the police department. It takes us all working together, the police and community together to get these violent individuals off the streets. We're going to continue that fight every day."

The mayor says talking about the violence and getting the community more engaged will hopefully lead to more arrests of those responsible for the crimes.
