Mayor Wants To Name Kevin Davis Police Commissioner

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake wants to name Interim Police Kevin Davis as the permanent leader for the Baltimore police.

Rawlings-Blake has reached out the City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young Monday to get the council's approval for the decision, WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun reports.

Davis has been the department's acting police commissioner since Rawlings-Blake fired Anthony Batts following civil unrest in the city and a spike in violent crime.

The 46-year-old interim commissioner is making $172,850, the Sun reports, while Batts earned $201,700 a year.

In a statement, Davis said:

"I want to thank the Mayor for this opportunity to serve the community and the men and women of the Baltimore Police Department. We will meet the challenges of our times with determination, transparency, and clarity of leadership. I look forward to working with City leaders to create a forward-looking public safety climate; one that recognizes our responsibility to protect our community from criminals and our imperative obligation to the community to build stronger collaborations based on a service driven atmosphere that demands respectful relationships and interactions with all Baltimoreans."

Details of the length of his possible contract or salary have not been made public yet.
