Naval Academy Scales Back Breathalyzer Testing Of Midshipmen

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Officials say the Naval Academy has revised its policies regarding Breathalyzer testing of midshipmen.

The academy's alcohol and drug education officer Lt. Katherine Jensen tells The Capital (http://bit.ly/1imHVcI ) that the Breathalyzer testing of midshipmen who are 21 years of age and older was thrown out during the 2013-2014 school year. Underage midshipmen may still be tested.

Officials say before, midshipmen who returned at night on weekends to the academy's dorm could get Breathalyzed if suspected of being drunk, even if they were over the age of 21.

Jensen says the Breathalyzer testing of two random companies of midshipmen on weekends after midnight was also revised last school year.

Jensen says now, eight randomly selected midshipmen are tested at 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays to ensure they're fit for duty.
