Lawyers Dispute Cell Data Argument In 'Serial' Killer Case

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland attorneys say a man convicted of murder at the center of a popular podcast shouldn't have a new trial.

The state attorney general's office filed arguments in Baltimore City Circuit Court on Wednesday.

The state is disputing arguments of an attorney for Adnan Syed that cell tower data placing the man near the murder scene are unreliable.

Attorneys for the state say records that were admitted into evidence were cellphone records accompanied by a certification of authenticity.

Syed was convicted in 2000 and sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend. The case has been the subject of the popular podcast "Serial."

A state appellate court has given Syed a limited opportunity to ask the lower court to consider an affidavit by a witness who was never interviewed.
