Parts Of Maryland See Major Storm Damage

HARFORD COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) – Residents across Maryland are still cleaning up from Tuesday night's quick but brutal storms. The National Weather Service is trying to figure out what blew through our area.

Christie Ileto has more on the cleanup.

For some tonight, the damage was minimal; for others, the strong winds and heavy rains caused major headaches.

It came fast and hit hard. Cell phone video from a WJZ viewer showed a car nearly swallowed by rising waters in a Reisterstown parking lot.

Strong winds and heavy rains flooded Frederick businesses and closed community enters like the YMCA.

"It's tough not operating and not being able to provide that service," said one.

Snapped trees limp over power lines in Glen Arm, while roofing erodes off Laurel businesses, damaging stores below.

"I thought part of the roof collapsed and then I see this," said Eric Rezapolpi.

Rezapolpi works next door; his business was spared.

The National Weather Service hasn't confirmed if this was a possible microburst or tornado. The storm had no clear path. One business bore the brunt in downtown Laurel; just across the street, it was only a broken window. On Main Street, it's as if nothing ever happened.

In Howard County, the Barbuscas say something swept through their backyard---they just don't know what.

"No more than 10 seconds, it was done," Rebecca Barbusca said. "It took our entire canopy, blew that completely off. Oh my heavens, we're so blessed; if it had hit this tree, it would have come right down on our house."

Cleaning up, residents brace for Joaquin.

In some areas, it took less than an hour for several inches of rain to fall. Residents are being asked to check their properties for damage.

And with more rainfall coming this week, residents and business owners are already boarding up windows and putting down tarps until repairs from this storm can be made.
