Foundation, Universities Announce $100M For Brain Research

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Kavli Foundation and seven universities are committing $100 million for neuroscience research and plan to launch three institutes to bring together researchers from different disciplines to investigate the workings of the brain.

The California-based foundation announced Thursday that it's partnering with Johns Hopkins University, Rockefeller University and University of California, San Francisco to launch the institutes next year.

Yale; Columbia; University of California, San Diego and Norwegian University of Science and Technology, which already have Kavli-affiliated neuroscience institutes, are also contributing to the effort.

Each institute will receive a $20 million endowment supported equally by their universities and the foundation, along with startup funding. They'll be part of an international network of seven institutes focused on neuroscience and a wider network of 20 focused on astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience and theoretical physics.
