71-Year-Old Man Killed In Baltimore Shopping Center Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The search is still on for the shooter who opened fire on a busy shopping center. The gunfire sent customers and business owners scrambling to take cover.

Gigi Barnett has more on how the shops are trying to make a return to normal.

Right around 3 p.m. Friday, a burst of gunfire rang out near this 7-Eleven on Reisterstown Road and West Rogers Avenue. An officer patrolling the busy shopping center made the 911 call.

"Shooting. I got a number one male down," he said.

The bullets struck five people. One of them, a 71-year-old man, is dead; he has been identified as James Gaylord. The other four are wounded.

Other customers ran for cover.

"I was getting ready to walk inside and everything happened," said Willie Johnson. "I was like, `Oh my God.'"

Now the gunfire is gone but shop owners and customers are still on edge.

"It gets me a little scared because a lot of people get shot around here," said Butchy Young.

"Someone came in and said, `Three people just got shot outside' and they closed down the DMV," said Maria DeSouza.

DeSouza was in the MVA when the shooting occurred and got away from the violence as fast as she could.

"Being around here, it feels very uncomfortable," she said.

A woman and three men were hurt during the shooting. Their injuries range from graze wounds to through-and-through bullet wounds.

Detectives are scouring surveillance video to track down the shooter. Police say if you have any information on this crime, they'd like to talk with you.
