WEATHER BLOG: Rainy Weekend

Today we should see the last of the impacts of Hurricane Joaquin for our area, at least in terms of rainfall. As the system moves northward towards Bermuda, a last push of rain is moving through the I-95 corridor today. High pressure off to the north in Quebec will fight against the rain and eventually push it back south, while the upper low pulling the moisture from Joaquin inland will dive further south in the Southeast. The combo will leaf to drying conditions on Sunday, with the only rain and drizzle left being south of the Mason-Dixon line, and even there it will be rather light to
end the weekend.

On Monday we can rejoice! The days of gloom and rain will be gone and things will begin looking up, at least for a short while. Sunshine will begin returning and temperatures will warm, by Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures will be back up to normal.

In fact, the next incursion of unsettled weather won't be until a quick moving low passes the region on Friday night, bringing a quick shot of rain. The modeling shows a day or two of nice weather over the weekend following that low, however it will depend on the next batch of moisture in the southeast how long it actually lasts.

As an aside, it will be worth mentioning how damp it will be today and even into tomorrow to some degree, the cooler than normal temperatures (by a good bit), and how windy it will be today through early next week. With high pressure off to the north and the combination of Joaquin and the upper level low's surface reflection in the southeast, the pressure gradient over the area will be significant. Wind gusts will be over 30 mph today for most of the I-95, at the coastal beaches 50 mph will not be out of the question. Joaquin will also bring rough surf and rip currents to the coast,
with beach erosion also being a problem.
