9-Year-Old Shot When Gunman Opens Fire In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) --A 9-year-old girl playing on her steps is shot on Sunday afternoon after police say the shooter missed their intended target.

WJZ's Tracey Leong has more.

According to police,  at approximately 1:00 p.m. a single gunman opened fire on the 3500 block Old York Road toward four intended targets, but the shooter missed, instead striking a 9-year-old playing on her steps.

"This is not OK, this should not be normal," said Councilman Brandon Scott. "Only the scum of the earth would do this to a 9-year-old child."

Detectives say following the shooting the four intended targets, describe only as young African American males, fled the scene.

During a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake addressed the situation and expressed frustration that another young child was injured as a result of Baltimore's alarming gun violence.

The shooting happened just blocks away from where 3-year-old McKenzie Elliot was gunned down while playing on her front porch last summer.

"The irony of being so close  to McKenzie Elliott's crime scene and her tragic death, maybe this is the time to get this one right," said Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.

Police are asking the public to come forward with any information that could bring the shooter behind bars. They say they are also searching for the four intended targets also involved in this incident.

"Come forward with information because that's the only way police is going to be able to get these individuals off of our streets," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "It's the only way we're going to be able to have a safer community and insure more young people, more of our children, don't become victims."

The 9-year-old victim is being treated at the hospital for a broken femur.
