911 Calls Released In 3rd Grader's Fatal Fall

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Nine-year-old Darius Clark died last week after an accidental fall at his school. Now the chilling 911 calls from Gwynns Falls Elementary School are made public.

Amy Yensi has the latest.

The person calling was in the health office with little Darius. Several other people were at his side and you can hear her describing his condition moments after the fall that ultimately took his life.

There's a moment in the 911 call from Gwynns Falls Elementary School when it's clear Darius Clark may be slipping away.

A city fire operator took the school's urgent call for help as the nine-year-old boy had multiple seizures.

"We had a child fall on the steps. He hit his head; he has a bump and it looks like he may be having a seizure right now. He's vomiting, unresponsive," the caller said.

Emergency crews were first called to the school for a reported seizure. Once there, they found something much worse: Darius had a fractured skull.

The family's attorney Tom Yost told WJZ Darius' parents want to know how the third grader suffered a deadly brain injury while in the school's care.

"Everybody has an expectation that their children will be safe in school," Yost said.

The fire department says it took about 32 minutes to get Darius to Johns Hopkins Children's Center from when the call was made. After four days at the hospital, he died last Tuesday.

Darius' family is now questioning what exactly happened inside the school and when.

"They're entitled to an answer. They're entitled to an explanation. If this is something that could have been prevented in any way, someone should be held accountable," Yost said.

The family is now demanding a full investigation of what happened to Darius.

Baltimore City police is investigating.
