Hogan Encourages Residents To Participate In 'Walk Maryland Day'

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Governor Hogan has encouraged Marylanders of all ages to take to the streets, trails and parks throughout the day on Wednesday, October 7, in honor of "Walk Day Maryland."

"For the health of our state and our communities," Hogan said, "if you take steps every day to add more walking to your routine, it will pay dividends and help lead to a healthier lifestyle."

Walk Maryland Day is a collaborative effort between the DHMH, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the University of Maryland Extension, and it was planned to coincide with National Walk to School Day, on October 7, for elementary and middle school children.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) is also hosting a lunchtime event in honor of the day.

"Maryland's state agencies are dedicated to promoting physical activity opportunities where Marylanders work, live and learn," said DHMH Secretary, Van T. Mitchell. Walking is an exercise suited for nearly everyone, is low-cost, convenient and safe."

DHMH will host a Walk Maryland Day kickoff event for state employees at 11:45 a.m. in the upper lobby of the 201 West Preston Street building.

Employees are then invited to join in a half-mile walk around the Bolton Hill neighborhood surrounding the State Center office complex. Health-related exhibits will be on display in the lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
