Officer Charged With Hitting Teen Gets Probation

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore police officer charged with hitting a teenage car theft suspect has been given a year of unsupervised probation.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Serge Antonin entered an Alford plea to one count of misconduct in office this week. The plea isn't an admission of guilt, but an acknowledgment that the state has enough evidence to convict. He was also charged with second-degree assault.

Prosecutors say Antonin hit the teenager after he was pulled out of a car in 2013.

Prosecutors sought a suspended jail sentence and 18 months of probation, but Chief Judge Alfred Nance offered one year of unsupervised probation. Antonin accepted the offer and avoids a conviction on his record if he completes probation successfully.

Police say internal disciplinary proceedings would now move forward.
