Fire Dept. Thrill Show Offers Family-Friendly Fun, Fire Safety Info

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- From simulated car fires to games for children. It's all part of a big event sponsored by the Baltimore City Fire Department.

Ron Matz reports there's plenty of excitement in store Saturday in East Baltimore.

Fighting fires is not an easy job. Tomorrow you can learn all about it at the Baltimore City Fire Department's annual Thrill Show.

"We'll have a kitchen fire simulation and we'll talk about what to do and what not to do," said Jeff Dickinson, an emergency service instructor with the city fire department. "Keeping people safe and the importance of smoke detectors and smoke alarms."

And the fire spreads quickly. Take a look at this simulated car fire. You'll see city firefighters in action and you can even apply for a job with the department.

"We're going through our hiring process right now,' said Samuel Johnson, spokesman for Baltimore City Fire Department. "The application process is open until October 12."

This exciting show is a lot more than fire and smoke. It's a family-friendly event.

"We'll have things for children, we'll have engine ride face painting and magic shows," said Dickinson, "but more importantly we'll have a lot of education displays and event for the adults and whole family as well."

The Maryland Association For Justice sponsors the show every year.

"It just seems a natural partnership for us to get involved with the firefighters," said David Diggs, president of the Maryland Association of Justice. " Both organizations are dedicated to protecting families. We're thrilled to partner with them every year to make the trill show possible and to make it free to the public."

There will be a firefighters challenge, the city police helicopter will make an appearance and of course plenty of this:

"We'll have live burn demonstrations, building fire and tanker fires," Johnson said. "If it;s a fire it's going to be here."

The Baltimore City Fire Academy is located at 6720 Pulaski Highway.

Saturday's thrill show is free and runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
