Man Arrested In Connection With Shooting Of 9-Year-Old Baltimore Girl

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Young victims of city violence. Baltimore police announce they've arrested one of the men they believe was an accomplice in the shooting of a nine-year-old girl in Waverly.

Derek Valcourt with more on the man in custody.

Police say information about the getaway vehicle led them to the suspect, but the trigger man remains at large.

When a stray bullet struck nine-year-old Dramell in the leg on Sunday, October 4, there was immediate outrage in her Waverly neighborhood.

"Only the scum of the Earth would do this to a nine-year-old child," said Councilman Brandon Scott.

Now police announce they've arrested 26-year-old Michael Daye. He's accused of driving the unidentified shooter to and from the crime scene.

Police say a vehicle description helped crack the case.

"We were able to trace that vehicle back to a person who was leasing that vehicle. The person who was leasing that vehicle identified Michael Daye as the person who was driving the vehicle that day," said Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.

Police also say they don't yet know a motive for the shooting, although they believe the shooter was targeting four other young men who witnesses say ran away from the scene.

"I saw a guy run around the corner. Four kids were coming down the street. It happened so fast, he just started shooting," said the victim's aunt.

The mayor is crediting people in the community with providing information that helped crack the case.

"The community has been very clear that they are not going to allow another child to be injured on their watch without saying something. And for that, I'm thanking them in advance," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

Michael Daye now faces a long list of criminal charges, including attempted first-degree murder.

The shooting happened in the same neighborhood where three-year-old McKenzie Elliot was shot and killed by a stray bullet. Police still are hoping to solve that case.
