The Norris & Davis Best Of - Week Of October 17th

This week's edition of the Norris & Davis Best Of features Keith Cavanaugh of the Terrapin Times talking about the firing of Randy Edsall, Corey Chavous breaking down the big college football games this weekend, and former Ravens cornerback Duane Starks on the current incarnation of Raven's defense struggling.

KEITH CAVANAUGH

Keith joined Ed and Steve to discuss the firing of Maryland head football coach Randy Edsall and the future of the program.

Steve asked Keith if he thinks Kevin Plank will do for Maryland what Phil Knight did for Oregon. Keith believes that Kevin Plank can have that impact because of his ability to help lure a new head coach, "all it it takes is one guy. We've seen it before with Ralph Friedgen. In his first three years he was able to galvanize the fan base."

Ed asked Keith who the viable candidates for the Maryland head coaching job are. Keith mentioned a few big names that will be considered saying, "its so early right now, but if you're asking me who would be the ideal candidate if he was available, it would be Bill O'Brien. There has definitely been some noise about Mack Brown and Greg Schiano who are in television right now, but again the landscape can change so much."

Keith went on to discuss Maryland recruiting over the past 5 years, and whether the firing of Edsall will impact the 2016 recruiting class.

COREY CHAVOUS

Corey joined Ed and Steve to talk about the latest news and notes around college football.

Ed asked Corey if Steve Spurrier retiring was a result of the teams poor performance or if there was something else involved, "I think he just left. When you look back to last years bowl game, he almost apologized for how they won. I think the steady decline has been tough on him."

Steve asked Corey about how the Maryland head coaching job stacks up against other coaching jobs in college football. Corey believes the Maryland job is an appealing one saying, "I think it measures pretty well. Maryland has always been relevant. Now that they are in the Big Ten it will help them in recruiting."

Corey went on to discuss the Florida Gators, Michigan Wolverines, and Utah Utes great starts to the season, and some potential head coaching candidates for the University of Maryland.

DUANE STARKS

Duane joined Ed and Steve to discuss the Ravens 1-4 start to the season and their struggles on the defensive side of the ball.

Steve asked Duane what the Ravens need to do to fix their struggling secondary. Duane noted that the Ravens just need to find a way to win, "first of all they have to find a way to win. I think some teams try to stack there roster and practice squad to help them the next season. This is one of those things where when you're losing you start to look for an immediate fix."

Ed asked Duane what the Ravens need to do to get more production from their receivers. Duane believes the Ravens need to get creative offensively, "you need to get your play makers involved, find ways to get fast receivers open, and get Justin Forsett the ball out of the backfield. It's one of those years where you look everywhere possible to find someone to help fix the problems."

Duane went on to discuss the strategy for defensive backs in today's NFL, and whether Dean Peas is to blame for the Ravens defensive struggles this season.
