Cell Phone Found Inside Towson Women's Locker Room Triggers Investigation

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- An alarming discovery inside the locker room of a women's sports team at Towson University.

Derek Valcourt explains how a cell phone has triggered a major investigation.

The concern is over whether that cell phone captured invasive images of some of the female athletes.

The Towson Tigers women's swim team has won some major titles and scored some big victories, but their latest dive into the headlines has been over the discovery of a smart phone that may have been recording the female teammates inside their locker room at the campus' Burdick Pool.

Jaws dropping on campus as news of the incident began to spread.

"That's really scary and kind of disgusting," one student said.

The phone and recordings on it are now in the hands of campus police who are investigating, but so far, haven't released any details on what they've discovered.

It's unclear if there even is anything on that cell phone. University officials have only said that it may contain video and audio recordings of the female athletes.

For its part, the university has issued a statement, saying the welfare of the students is their top priority and that they have "...been in contact with the members of the women's swimming team to offer them any of our resources, support, counseling, etc. that they may need..."

"That's something that I would never want to happen. That's embarrassing and just violating," said Adanna Onuoha, student.

Women on campus are frustrated this happened in a place where there is an ultimate expectation of privacy.

"That's the whole point. If students can't feel comfortable there, where can they?" said Victoria Bazuzi, student.

"It's really detrimental to the people on the swim team because most of those girls are on scholarships anyway, so that's real bad if it's out there on social media, because once it's out there, it can't really go away," said Savannah Kirtley, student.

"If they're an athlete for their future career and just like as their well being, it's concerning," said Missy Mullin, student.

Students say anyone responsible for recording videos in a locker room deserves jail time.

Towson's women's team is currently ranked third in the Division I Mid-Majors category and ranked 32nd overall.
