Civil War Group Meets Goal For Preserving Antietam Parcel

SHARPSBURG, Md. (AP) -- The Civil War Trust says it has met a fundraising goal to preserve 1.2 acres of the Antietam battlefield near Sharpsburg.

The Washington-based group says it had to raise $250,000 by Tuesday to complete its $300,000 purchase of the parcel in an area called the North Woods. Spokesman Jim Campi said Wednesday the drive was successful.

The nonprofit group says three different Union combat units advanced and retreated across the parcel during the clash on Sept. 17, 1862, known as the bloodiest one-day battle of war.

In September, the group celebrated its preservation of 44 other acres at Antietam.

The battle is also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg.
