Md. Students Invited To Attend Broadway At The White House

WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- A trip of a lifetime for three Maryland students. The White House transforms into Broadway, and those students have a front row seat.

Amy Yensi with more on their visit.

The visit was part of the first lady's initiative to promote education after high school. They've tackled other subjects in the past, but this was all about Broadway.

These young performers are ready to take the stage and hit the high notes.

The three Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts students and their teacher were invited by First Lady Michelle Obama to attend Broadway at the White House.

"It just shows you what you're capable of and that the possibilities are endless," said Gino Cardoni, student.

The students took part in workshops with some of Broadway's best actors, directors, choreographers and producers, getting one-on-one advice from some of the best in show business.

"I said, 'Ms. Goldberg,' and she was like, 'Whoopi,' and I was like, 'No!'" said student Shalom Omo-Osagie.

Actor Matthew Morrison posted clips of the all-day symposium to honor arts education on Instagram.

"It was amazing to see light bulbs click when the professionals would talk about something and just to see them see these people they've idolized or admired," said Kelly Carlson, Patapsco High School theater chair.

Patapsco was one of two Maryland schools at the event. For 40 students from across the country, the handpicked group enjoyed several Broadway performances and even got to join in for a show tune.

"These stars that we've talked to all day and they sat next to us at lunch, and then to go see them do like a point dance or sing a song or do a scene, it was totally incredible," said Sarah Jones, student.

The students plan to apply what they learned to their careers, and until their names are in lights, they're rehearsing for their school's fall show.

Broadway at the White House was filmed by TLC and will air as a special on Thanksgiving.
