Wire Fence Blamed For Deer Deaths May Be Coming Down

RAWLINGS, Md. (AP) -- A woven-wire fence blamed for multiple deer deaths in western Maryland may be coming down.

Allegany County Administrator David Eberly told the Cumberland Times-News Thursday the county will survey nearby property owners. He says if they don't object, the fence will likely be removed.

The fence runs along a road in the Barton Industrial Park south of Cumberland.
Eberly says it was installed to mark the boundary between public and private property. White-tailed deer trying to jump the fence sometimes get their hind legs caught in the wire mesh.

Office worker Mat Schartiger says he's seen three deer trapped in the fence.
Jim Mullan of the Department of Natural Resources says the most common injury is a dislocated hip.
