Police: Missing Washington College Student Found Dead

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Jacob Marberger, a Washington College student who has been missing since Monday has been found dead, police said.

Chestertown Police Department said that 19-year-old Marberger was found Saturday near Hamburg, Pennsylvania.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding at this difficult time," police said in a statement.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Marberger was found in a picnic area near Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Washington College was on high alert throughout the week and ultimately shut down operations through Thanksgiving after Marberger was believed to be armed.

Earlier this week, his parents told police their son drove from the Eastern Shore college to their Pennsylvania home overnight and took a rifle case that may have a gun in it.

Family members say Marberger was despondent over issues at college. Classmates say he'd recently been suspended.

"From what I know is that he hazed a potential member of his frat, basically, and pulled out a gun on him," one student said. "Everybody kind of thought it was a joke, so it was kind of let go. And then it was brought up to public safety later that week."

Police say the teen did not make any threats against the school.

Washington College expressed this condolences in a statement saying,"We extend our deepest sympathies to the Marberger family in their time of unimaginable grief. This is a terrible blow to our community, and the outpouring of compassion and support we have shown each other will help us through this difficult time. We need to continue to be supportive of each other as we mourn individually and as a community."

The college says counseling services will be on hand when students return to campus.
