New Poll Shows Voters Divided When It Comes To Blame For Baltimore Unrest

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A new poll shows voters are divided when it comes to the unrest that followed Freddie Gray's death in April.

The poll was taken for WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun and The University of Baltimore.

City residents polled overwhelmingly say joblessness and racism are the root causes of the April unrest.

While voters outside the city blame the lack of personal responsibility for the city's troubles.

Voters were also asked who they sympathize with more -- police or protesters.

In the city, 35 percent sympathize with police and statewide that number surges to 50 percent.

It's a tie with who sympathizes with protesters both in the city and across the state it's 30 percent.

A small percentage see both side and a larger percentage in the city, sympathize with neither side.

Another dividing line is the performance of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Fifty-two percent of city voters approve of the job she's done so far in office, but only 26 percent do statewide.

Opinions were also far apart when it came to how Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby has handled the Freddie Gray case so far -- more than 63 percent in the city approve, but only 38 percent statewide do.
