Travel Alert May Affect Some Thanksgiving Plans

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Just as millions of Americans travel for the holidays, the State Department issued a worldwide travel alert. Security is being increased at major transit hubs as ISIS warns of possible attacks.

Meghan McCorkell has more on the steps being taken.

State officials say there are no credible threats here in Maryland but security is being heightened as a precaution.

From airports to rail stations and other transit hubs, heightened security is visible.

"You see the police officers withe the dogs and all and the K9 unit," said one traveler.

In the wake of the Paris attacks, the State Department issued a worldwide travel alert, warning Americans to "exercise particular caution during the holiday season."

ISIS has released videos threatening both New York and Washington DC.

"We're concerned that there are actual threats, suspicious threats to the Washington DC area, which we sort of surround," said Governor Larry Hogan.

Tuesday, Hogan met with top emergency management officials.

"Staying vigilant. Be vigilant. If you see something, say something. Don't hesitate at all," said Russell Strickland, Maryland Emergency Management.

At BWI and all airports across the country, security has been beefed up amid the alert. Extra officers patrol the concourse as thousands of travelers go through security. Airlines warn people to arrive two hours early for flights inside the US.

"It's a little bit scary but I trust we have things under control," said one traveler.

It's the same story on the rails, where Amtrak has increased security at stations, on the trains and along the tracks.

"With the heightened security, I doubt that we're going to have everything," said Edward Overhiser. "I hope."

Despite the alert, some say they're not changing their plans.

"I'm not because I know God is with me. I know he is. And he will protect me," said Catherine Heat.

At this point, the State Department says they are not suggesting anyone cancel any travel plans.

Federal officials are warning Americans to stay vigilant and steer clear of large crowds.
