City School Reopens After Stabbing Between Students

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- One student is recovering and a second student is charged as an adult with attempted murder in a stabbing at Renaissance Academy in Baltimore last week. The school re-opened Monday.

Pat Warren reports parents are asking questions.

It wasn't easy for some students to come back.

"I just keep thinking about the incident that occurred," said one student.

Police say 17-year-old Donte Crawford walked into a science class with a knife on November 24 and stabbed 17-year-old Ananias Jolly several times in the upper torso. The two reportedly have a history of altercations.

On Monday, security was in place.

"This morning we did a hand-wand procedure--you can use metal detectors or a hand-wand--we utilized hand-wands this morning, and it was very successful. I was there to see it myself," said Chief Marshall Goodwin, Baltimore City School Police Force.

Longtime resident Henri Daniels says neighbors have had some concern.

"We've had to call the police many times because of what we see," she said.

Renaissance Academy was once on a list of proposed school closings, and at the time of the stabbing, schools CEO Dr. Gregory Thornton was asked if that would be revisited.

"At this point in time, I think I need to go back and do a lot of rethinking," said Thornton.

The chief concern is safety--how was a student able to get a knife into the building?

"That's a part of the investigation, and that will come out during the investigation process," Chief Goodwin said.

The stabbing at Renaissance Academy occurred a week after an unrelated case, where a student was found with a loaded weapon in the school.

School counselors will be on hand for students throughout the rest of the week.

The student who was stabbed remains hospitalized in critical condition.
