Washington College Students And Faculty Return To Campus

CHESTERTOWN, Md. (WJZ) -- Things are returning to normal at Washington College where classes are now back in session.

Derek Valcourt reports for WJZ.

Law enforcement worried that a potentially dangerous and armed student was a threat to the campus. The student, which took his life, lead to the entire campus being shut down.

"I'm just glad everything is back to normal," one student said.

Jacob Marberger was the sophomore who led to the campus lockdown. He went missing two weeks ago.

"We're really just thinking of Jacob's family right now and hoping that the campus heals in general," a student said.

Marberger's parents reported him missing November 16 after he drove from the Eastern Shore campus to their Pennsylvania home overnight, along with a rifle case.

Campus officials worried that the 19-year-old was distraught over disciplinary problems at college and intended to return to campus to wreak havoc.

But he was instead found dead days later in Pennsylvania from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leaving friends like Hannah Foster saddened.

"He was just, the kind of guy that everyone wanted to know," Foster said. "He brought a lot of energy to the conversation and was very passionate."

Grief and crisis counselors were made available as students returned to classes Monday.

"The school did a really great job handling it all," said student Josh Peterson. "But for situations like these, three's no words and time will heal."

Funeral services for Jacob Marberger were held in Philadelphia the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in Chestertown.

Students also told WJZ that the school will be adding two more days to their calendar to help make up for the lost classroom time.
